Just an outstanding experience.
We were a group of six and enjoyed every moment. Doug is an outstanding instructor, very welcoming and ensures that every person has a great experience.
Fun, unique and informative.
we had a work offsite for 30 people there and it was an amazing experience. Doug & co. are patient, helpful and informative. I was worried with so many people it would be chaotic, but they know how to run everything so efficiently. Would definitely recommend!
We had so much fun making a pumpkin and vase. Emily is the best. I'll definitely be back to make some more goodies and hopefully learn some new techniques. It was surprisingly fast to make everything too. Can't wait to go back.
We came here on Groupon and made beautiful showpieces. They have different tiers and you can chose what to make based on the tier you select. The guide is very helpful and is assisting you the entire time - you are not alone and don't end up messing the glassware.
I love this place and the experience!
I've been twice and plan on going back again! All the instructors are super nice, helpful, and fun. I plan to make a full collection of blown glasses for my house. Treat yourself and go here!
My coworkers and I went here for a team-building event.
Going into it, I thought I'd be attempting to manipulate molten glass on my own with occasional supervision. Not the case at all. The instructors guide you through every step of the process.
During one part, you're cooking the glass. Kind of like roasting a giant marshmallow in a really, really hot fire. During another part, you're blowing air into a tube to help force the glass to have a particular shape. There is also some manipulating the finished product with a metal tool. Eye protection and large hot mitts are worn at all times for safety.
The entire activity requires no skill or artistic ability whatsoever. (Perfect for me!) As long as you can stand, sit, follow simple directions, and breathe out like you're blowing out birthday candles, you have all the skill you need.
The instructors make the entire process very easy and explain the rationale behind every step.
This is a fun activity to do with a group, and you wind up with a souvenir at the end.
We all had the best time for a friends start to her bachelorette here! Both the instructors were super cool, chill, funny, and helpful! All of our pieces came out amazing and I can't wait to go back! Also a wonderful winery right next door; make a day out of it!
I have been collecting glass pumpkins for 10+ years but nothing tops making your very own glass pumpkin. I highly suggest watching Doug's YouTube videos prior to coming so you have a clear idea of the layout and the steps in the process. Also, I suggest you don't wear layers. It gets HOT in there so protect yourself by wearing pants and a long sleeve shirt, but keep the jacket in your car. Doug was there to help every step of the way and really explained everything very calmly and thoroughly. When you get around hot glass it's a little nerve racking but Doug helps guide you through it. I am so excited about my final product and can't wait to hold it in my hands. I think from this point going forward I'm going to make all of my pumpkins at this studio. Thanks

Went for my dad's birthday and it was such a cool experience. You are guided through the whole process. You choose what item to make and the colors. Be prepared to use your lower abdomen to blow your glass. Takes a day to be fully ready and if you're not from around they will ship it out to you! Great experience for 15 and up plus the winery is right next door.
Read about this on Yelp, then found a Groupon that it even better. Way fun/cool experience. How many of your friends have blown glass? Doug added us to a full class (6) because we were only in town for 2 days, thank you Doug. Class started on time and she made us all feel comfortable & safe. Each person gets one on one instructions for 10-15 min. to make your project, you can't screw it up. A must do if your in the area. Nice winery next door.
Great unique option for a family or team event. Glass blowing ended up being a lot of fun. It has a fun vibe and you get to be creative and learn a new skill. I made a heart which I gave as a gift. Score!
It also shares the campus with a winery. Would recommend going to the glass blowing first for safety reasons. ;-)
Did this for my first time! Was something I always wanted to do. Had a blast. Couldn’t stop smiling. Made a starfish. Can’t wait to go back and make a pumpkin.
So much fun. Highly recommend taking this class with some friends. You get to pick your colors and it's very hand out you do about 85% of the work with the help on the instructor. All glass work project come out amazing.
I made a pumpkin her last ear at the pumpkin festival. It was a great time. I want to do it again’n
What a great activity to share with a bestie! Doug was an amazing teacher. Patient, funny, nurturing all to be sure you create the perfect glass treasure. Will be going back for more classes! Don't miss this experience.
They made it easy and safe but you really do get to play with their toys :) super nice, great outcome, and very patient with all of my questions. Highly recommend
Our class was awesome, it was very hands on, they teach out a lot about each step and they are super helpful to make sure everything turns out perfect.
I appreciate how skilled the staff is and Douglas is great!
I would definitely go again! We made a starfish and Christmas ornaments.
AMAZING! I was 'blown' away by the experience :) the instructors are very experienced, hands-on, funny, and friendly. We picked a tier one class, so we can pick among mini pumpkin, vase, heart, and holiday decorative balls.
I picked the pumpkin. The colors came out to be different than expected but nevertheless still breathtakingly beautiful :) The spiral stem on top was a bit difficult to make but the instructor was there to guide us through the whole thing. The instructor also encouraged creativity throughout.
Highly recommend to anyone to do this activity! And if you can, go earlier, and then save enough time to go to the winery right next door.
I LOVE this place!! A life long dream come true for me. A fun and educational experience with professional & friendly staff. Andrea is very helpful selecting the colors of the piece you are going to make and giving tips for your next piece! The lady helping me on the deck (can't remember her name) knew her stuff! She was also great and very helpful! It was just a great experience all the way around!!! I can't wait to go back and make my jellyfish lamp!!!
Certainly one of the best activities I've done in Half Moon Bay! Using the Groupon was a more affordable way to check out the experience. The staff were awesome and explained everything; they were truly passionate about their work. The art glass class is very hands-on and interactive. Pieces were ready the next day and turned out beautifully. Fun thing to do with people of all ages!
Had so much fun with my team here. We all made different things in different colors and had an absolute blast! They were really patient with all of us newbies and made it a very special day. Thank you!
Nice class and nice people!
the quality of glass is nice and they let you color and design your own glass.
My daughter took me there for my birthday, this was her third time going there, and she could not stop raving about this place!!! It was certainly a fun, interesting and memorable learning experience, I will definitely cherish my pumpkin art work once I receive it in the mail. And ahh, the teacher - a master in the field - was exquisite in all aspects!!!
Had a great time! Jack and Andrea were wonderful! Looking forward to going back and bringing my daughters this time! I highly recommend this place as the experience was wonderful!
Awesome experience great friendly instructors can't wait to do it again Thank you
If you are considering doing this, just book it. It brought so much joy to my life.
Great class! I just want to keep going back to make more!
This was a great experience for me and my friends ... Doug accommodated us despite having full batches of students ... and he was truly a very patient instructor ... would highly recommend his classes ...
What an amazing experience for myself and 12 Girl Scouts! We learned so much and made gorgeous pumpkins!
Doug, you are so amazingly talented! Thank you for being such a patient and great instructor. I love my glass pumpkin and have been recommending Half Moon Bay Art Glass to everyone I know. Can’t wait to come back again with friends ?
Great experience blowing glass. Great instructions, beautiful final project... pumpkin!
Class was a lot of fun. Though you can take off after your piece is done, we made the most of it, watching the other participants who made different things (wine glass, starfish) and chatting with them. You get to pick all the colors on your piece. In reality it's more like being a bumbling assistant in the way of the master, but it's still cool to learn how it's done. Cheaper to go, have an experience and make your own pumpkin rather than buy one on Main St! Although you will realize that an experienced glass worker can bang one out in 10 minutes! The perfect amount of time for a cool experience without being bored if you don't fancy yourself a master. 10:00 class was perfect to grab some lunch and beach or shopping time after.
A truly wonderful, unique experience! I took my girlfriends to this as an adventure & we had the best time. Doug & Elaine made everything very clear & safe and are patience personified. They put everyone at ease. If you can, between classes, get Doug to talk about his orchids and other Art Glass pieces...so fascinating. We each ended up with a lovely piece and a real appreciation for working with this exacting but beautiful medium. Highly recommended! We'll probably do it again, too.
A group of us went to Half Moon Bay Art Class to make blown glass pumpkins and it was probably the most fun I have ever had doing a project! Douglass was a delight. He first had us pick what color body and stem we wanted for our pumpkin and then he guided each one of us (there were 7) through the process so we would feel safe. They all came out beautiful!! I want to go back and bring my teenage kids so they can try it. I heartily recommend this place for something fun, slightly adventurous and thoroughly enjoyable.
I came here over the summer and loved every moment. I got a special deal on living social I believe, which allowed me to make a mini pumpkin. Jack was our teacher and he had a great sense of humor, which made the class even more fun. I felt as though I learned something, while also creating a tangible item I was able to take home. I now feel addicted and need to create a chihuly garden in my living room. Anyway, jack you da man and I hope I can make it back soon! Thanks again Half Moon Bay Art Glass!!
I have always wanted to try glass blowing, probably since I saw it on Mister Roger's Neighborhood. I am also fairly terrible at any sort of crafts or artistry, so I approached this with some trepidation. No one wants to burn their fingers off. I am so very glad I decided to give this a try!
This studio was an absolute pleasure to spend the afternoon at. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Doug, the glass artisan and teacher, is funny, knowledgeable, patient and an excellent teacher. I cannot say enough good things about him. Plus, he fully entertained my gal pal and I being ridiculous, and anyone who can tolerate that gets high marks in my book. We will be back for more classes with Doug, no doubt. The photo op of you on your hands and knees blowing your glass is, in my opinion, worth the price of admission.
A little bonus for my fellow lefties - this is the one time in my life I felt like being left-handed was a real perk. The actual blowing process was very intuitive to the left side, so I only felt a little but like a total spaz while making my project. Again, kudos to the staff for the patience.
I highly recommend the adjacent winery, as well - go deal with molten glass first and THEN have a glass of wine. Sit outside and enjoy the patio. Really - the most perfect way to spend a weekend
Our pumpkins turned out beautiful! And another shout out to the staff for being so welcoming once again when we returned to pick them up!
I came here for my birthday with my fianc to make mini glass pumpkin! And it was a blast. I would highly recommend coming here if you have a guest out of town or if you want to do sometime special with a significant other. I was honestly more nervous than I thought. Working with glass you have to be pretty swift and nimble as when you stop moving, the glass will be pulled down by gravity. The instructors were great and very friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed it! You have to wait a day for it to cool down, so you can either opt in picking up next day or have them mail it to you.
AWESOME! Such a great and fun experience. For an intro experience, you can pick between a couple of designs as well as colors. if you pick making a pumpkin, you have a choice of 2 styles. the class include basic equipment overview, and of course supervised hands on experience. finished products need overnight to cool and settle so pick up next day. They offer the option to mail to you for a fee.
We highly recommend this place and can't wait to take another lesson!
went there as part of team building sponsored by my company. Made a glass pumpkin followed by wine tasting (5 wines for $10) and some boche ball. was thinking of skipping this company event but glad that I went..
I found a Groupon and went with my wife - we loved it!! Really unique, and with expert instruction that was kind, hands-on, and balanced. Jack knew when to step in and when to step aside. If that weren't enough, they have a dog on site called "Hambone" who is just awesome (and my wife nicknamed him Bone Thug).
This has been something I wanted to do for a long time - specifically, I've been wanting to make my very own glass pumpkin! I found a Groupon and convinced a few friends to do it with me.
The class is relatively small so that you can each get one-on-one help with making your pumpkin. They were very informative about each step of the process and what happens next. They guide you through and help you create your work of art. It's a lot of fun!!
Wearing light clothing - it gets really hot!
It's located next to a winery so you can get some tasting done if you're waiting for your turn.
My sister and I had a "sisters' weekend" in May and I got a Groupon for us to make some glass art. Note that even if your Groupon is for something specific (like "mini pumpkin") you can upgrade to a bigger or more complex piece and just pay the difference.
It's a small shop located next to a winery (suggestion: do glass blowing first, THEN onto wine tasting!) There are display cases where you can peruse what colors you want and what project you want to do. My sister chose a paperweight and I picked a pumpkin.
Staff are friendly and accommodating. I wanted to make sure my mini pumpkin was mini enough to fit in the display case at home; James (I hope that was his name!) was mindful of my request. He was also very helpful for those of us who are a little too short to see into the hot fire place. Very hands on class. If you've never done this before, I recommend NOT being the first in the group - watch first, then you'll enjoy it more.
HINT: Wear sensible shoes and clothing. Don't be like the group in front of us who were all dressed in high heels - one was even in a long evening gown?!?! Crazy.
WARNING!!!
You will become crazily addicted to this fabulous longtime classic Artesianal craft! You will find yourself compelled to return to this charming, bucolic rustic barn and winery to blow endless treasures of fabulously colored and psychedelic treasures.
The possibilities are endless - from starfish to jellyfish, to gorgeous personalized vases.
Master Doug"glass" is beyond talented, patient, and a fantastic teacher. His calm and witty demeanor make this an incredible experience for all.
Make new friends, create something beautiful, while learning a new skill. Follow up your adventure with a glass of wine at the charming winery next door. Dress in your summer best for this is a very hot experience!
Five stars!!! Go blow! You will love it!
The staff is great. They make the classes fun! They are very good teachers. They really know there stuff., very knowledgeable. The pumpkins are adorable. They have a lot of different beginner items to choose from. Highly recommend booking a class. Fun for a group!
I bought the glass pumpkin blowing class as a birthday present for my daughter-in-law. We had a wonderful experience and both created (with much help and guidance from Doug) beautiful blown glass pumpkins. You get to select the color pumpkin, opaque or transparent, and the color of the stem. Doug guides you through each step, safely and respectfully. He keeps it fun and helps you create a beautiful masterpiece. Make sure you bring your camera and have someone document the steps so you can prove that you created it.
This was my second class for making glass and my husband 's first time. The instructors are all very down to earth, nice people! It was a fun experience and I highly recommend it!
I don't know where to begin...My girlfriend's happened to find this venue on LivingSocial .Never heard of it before. We planned last weekend around it, overnighting in Half Moon Bay. Best weekend ever!
We didn't know what to expect. It was a fun adventure. Jack and Andrea treated us with kid gloves, explaining the process, step by step, giving as much or little hands on help as we needed. I was apprehensive and a little scared at first, but that "melted away" in a heartbeat. I'm an artist, and I have to honestly say that the glass blowing experience at
Half Moon Bay Art Glass was one of the most fun, fulfilling events of my life. I live in Marin but will definitely be going back in the very near future! This is an opportunity you really don't want to miss. ( And ANY person can do it!.. That's the best part!
This is a very fun place to go to. Very helpful and nice staff. They have a variety of artwork one can make and a vast assortment of colors and combinations to choose from. I highly recommended this place.
Jack was a great teacher-It's teaching just the way it should be done, success oriented, stress free and encouraging. You will love it-go.
Decided to do something different for my birthday. Took a class and have a wonderful pumpkin I made as a memory of the event. Doug and Jack were great. They took time with each person to make sure they had a great finished product. Do plan on spending several hours as it is one student at a time making their keepsake. They were willing to explain the process in as much detail as asked. It's very interesting and fun watching others make their products too.
We had the best time ever blowing pumpkins with these guys. What a blast picking out colors and experimenting. Jack was awesome! He allowed me to mess around with the process to layer my glass- the end result was awesome. Don't need to be talented to get a great result. Perfect length to keep your attention and learn but not get bored! Can't say enough good things!
I have some wonderful friends who helped me commemorate my 60th birthday by treating me to this wonderful experience. Our pumpkins are our mementos of years of friendship and our visits to Half Moon Bay. I can't say enough about how great the people are who work there. It's obvious by all the posts that the people are exceptional! Friendly, kind, safety conscious (as you would expect!) and dedicated to providing you with a truly unique experience that you won't soon forget! We loved Jack who walked us through with humor and who guided us every step of the way. You come away with a great appreciation of the skill and practice it takes. I can't wait to go back!
I have always wanted to try glass blowing, so when we decided on Half Moon Bay for our vacation and found out classes were available, we jumped on it. The entire experience was a lot of fun. While there was some trepidation about messing up, the instructors were extremely patient and informative and I had a blast! Since we were leaving the next day, and the glass pumpkins have to cool slowly (otherwise they'll crack), we paid to have my pumpkin shipped. I took the class on a Saturday and the pumpkin arrived perfectly fine on Wednesday! Yes, it may seem pricey, but where else will you ever have this kind of opportunity? (I'd post a photo, but can't see how to do that!)
Doug and Jack both gave our party a fantastic time while learning a new craft. This was the first time we ever tried glass blowing, both of the men were professional and wonderful at working together. Very hands on learning experience and I would both recommend this again and would do so myself. Thank you to both Doug and Jack for helping us through this process and allowing us to enjoy ourselves and take pictures while we were there!
Great class! Doug is a great teacher, he took his time to walk us through the process and ensure we understood. Very hands on, he guides you through but is ready to step in to make sure your piece comes out perfect. The rest of his staff is extremely helpful and friendly as well. Would definitely recommend and take the class again.
Excellent experience!! Doug was fun and was very accommodating to my boyfriends disability. Although the pumpkins were small, the experience was amazing. Such a great anniversary treat. Please give this nice man your business. We went back the next day and our pumpkins were all ready to take home.
Five stars and then some more. Great experience lots smiles and a fun piece of art when it is all said and done. Because of annealing you have to stay overnight some where in the area or else pay to have it shipped. Really nice activity for a weekend get away. We did not take advantage of the wine tasting, but that too is offered on site.
Trully a fun experience, you have to do it as least once in your lifetime. It doesnt take too long to get the glass done and the teacher was really informative. I like how you get a one on one hands on experience with the teacher to make sure the glass is done perfectly. I highly recommend this class to everyone.
I purchased the pumpkin making class through Groupon on a whim--I've been needing things to do lately. It was so much fun!! Doug is a wonderful teacher. My mom and I both made some gorgeous pumpkins. I'm definitely planning a return visit (or two) to make some tumblers, and possibly one of those amazing jellyfish lamps.
My girl friend and I had a day out planned, and this was our first stop. We found it through Groupon, bought the Groupon, scheduled a date, and loved it! I found the Groupon deal to be pretty good, and there were plenty of dates to choose from (sometimes that is a problem with Groupon deals - not enough openings, but here there were plenty of options). We showed up just on time, got signed in and waited just a bit. The classes all seemed to be structured the same - 6 people, you go in the order that you show up.
Doug goes through some safety items with you first, then he goes through a lot of instructions. It got me nervous, especailly dealing with such hot equipment and glass, but when it came to be my turn, he ended up being great at guiding me through every step and letting me participate. It was my first glass-blowing class, but he made it do-able. It was a learning experience, and fun for a girls' day out. I highly recommend trying this!
This class was SO MUCH FUN!!!! Not only enjoyable, but really neat to get to see all the steps & skills involved in making glass pieces. Also, Doug is an amazing teacher!! (My mom & I took the class together -- my gift to her for Mother's Day. We are both elementary teachers & we both agreed Doug is hands down The Best teacher!!) He explains everything so well, makes sure you try it w/o molten glass first, & is very calm & patient. If you are looking for something different, something fun, & something that will leave you with great memories, try a Half Moon Bay Art Glass Class! :)
Artistic or not, you have got to try this. Honestly, when I was told I would be doing this, I thought that it wouldn't be my thing... well, actually, I thought I might burn the &*%$ out of myself. However, the owner of the studio and the teacher, Douglass Brown, made the experience enjoyable and SAFE.
I went to this class with my brother. He had tried it before and fallen in love with glass blowing. We paid for a session and it was a private session -- just us. It was reasonably priced as well. First, there was a demonstration and a safety presentation. Because it is the first class, this class is based on glass work, not glass blowing, which comes after you have acquired more skills. We picked our project. Even though it was my first class, there were options. It's Half Moon Bay, so I had to make a pumpkin! It actually came out looking like a pumpkin and like some of the ones you see in the stores in Downtown HMB. I was astonished! Now I can't wait to go back and make it a pair of pumpkins!
This studio offer glass pumpkin making class. Doug the artist will guild you through the process and do the most difficult part--"blow air bubble into the hot glass" for you. You don't have to have experience of glass blowing. its almost guaranty to go home with a pretty looking pumpkin. You can't take your pumpkin home the same day( its needs to be anneal) but you can have it ship for additional cost. It is much more connivance to have it ship since the studio located in Half moon bay. I had mine shipped the first round, and pick up a batch of 4 the second round. Doug is an cool artist and a funny person. He will explain everything along the process, you can see a lot of happy posts on his facebook page. So if you like to be tactile and want to try out something new, this will be a fun week end activity. Take the class and have lunch or dinner at half moon bay. It will be fun! honestly, 5 stars are not enough for me.
I purchased the pumpkin making glass blowing class for myself and a friend (for her birthday) via Groupon. I have always noticed the glass blown pumpkins on Main Street Half Moon Bay (and have bought one at a previous pumpkin festival), plus the amazing jelly fish lights at Cafe Gibraltar (in El Granada) - all made by Doug Brown. He's a wonderful, patient and very encouraging teacher. As I suspected, he makes it look easy as he said he's been doing this for quite a while - but this is very do-able! I haven't picked up my pumpkin yet (just took the class yesterday) but as he was putting it in the cooling kiln, it did resemble a pumpkin :) I will definitely be back - for a tumbler, possibly to make additional pumpkins as gifts and for a jelly-fish lamp!! I highly recommend this for anyone and you don't necessarily need to be crafty or artistic. I wouldn't recommend this for young kids - probably 12 and older. Enjoy a stroll through Main Street HMB, have a meal at one of the many wonderful places then head off to class! It's between 30-45 minutes per student to make their pumpkin (start-to-finish) and make sure to snap some photos!
Wow! Glass blowing my own pumpkin was such fun! This was my first time blowing glass, and believe me, I am not artistic, but Doug is a patient teacher who first provides a demonstration of the entire process, then guides you through creating your own. There are plenty of glass pumpkins available for sale which also serve as ideas for colors and patterns, since you get to choose the colors and style you want for your own pumpkin.
This is worth every penny and I couldn't be more pleased with the beautiful pumpkin I created! This experience is worth repeating time and time again!
As guided by Douglas Brown; the class at Half Moon Bay Art Glass was very rewarding for both my wife and myself. This is a great local adventure that locals should take visitors to when driving along Half Moon Bay. We will definately be back!
I took the class with my sister-in-law and WOW--what a great experience! Doug and his assistant Greg are wonderful, patient (and entertaining) teachers, who have designed systems that enable newbies get past their fears in order to create unique works of art. We made pumpkins, but a number of different creations can be made. I initially learned about the classes through Groupon, but it is not necessary to use a Groupon--contact Doug directly and he doesn't have to pay an intermediary. I plan to purchase gift certificates for glass classes for several friends and family members. Want to reiterate that going through the experience of actually handling the tools, conquering fear of the "glory hole" and making the thing was really the greatest joy about it. Having something pretty (my pumpkin) as a memento is wonderful, but the "in the moment" experience is just fantastic too. As I heard someone say recently, "the point of expendable money is not to buy things, but to experience more life." Throw a few bucks at this class, support Doug and Greg, and have a fantastic experience!
Went with a group from work and had so much fun. Douglass and Greg are wonderful, they take the time to show you what you will make and how to do it. It's almost like a dance, you are moving from the kiln to the bench to blow and roll your glass and back to the kiln. The end results are amazing. I still can't believe I made a glass blown pumpkin. Great experience!
I came here for a work event and we made some of those glass pumpkins. Its definitely an experience. Doug is the owner of this shop and does amazing work. Greg assists him with the classes. Both were really knowledgeable about the process of blowing glass. They go through the whole process for everyone. Honestly, I didn't pick up anything that they went through in the training. But its ok, because they are with you every step of the way helping you to make your pumpkin. All of my coworkers had fun and really enjoyed the whole morning taking the class. It does take some time to make each pumpkin, so allot some time for that if you are going in a big group. Our pumpkins all ended up coming out really cool. They were all a little different, which was neat to see. Definitely a must do in Half Moon Bay.
I took a class with my mom on Friday. What a wonderful experience! We both enjoyed it and learned a lot. Doug is a wonderful craftsman and teacher. Well worth taking a class and going to see some of his work displayed at the shop.
My fiancé and I came here to try something new and crafty and we were so impressed with Half Moon Bay Art Glass. Even without a voucher or coupon, I think the price of the classes are well worth it. Doug is an AMAZING teacher... One thing I really appreciated is he answered all our numerous questions! He is very patient. So, you get to pick out the exact colors you want, they give a class overview, walk you through every step, and then you end with a beautiful piece of art! Highly recommend for a unique and fulfilling experience.
Came with friends for a new adventure for us all. Doug is very patient, informative, and creative. After a brief safety demonstration, he guided each of us through the entire process of creating our own glass pumpkin. We were able to choose exactly the color of pumpkin we wanted. The results were amazing. You will need to wait 24 hours before bringing your pumpkin home. We were happy to drive back to Half Moon Bay and pick them up! This would be fun for coworkers, or a really nice gift for a friend.
Doug and his staff have tremendous patience with teaching and guiding each individual through the process of making a glass artwork. He also makes sure you are safe doing it. Combined with a great deal from living social, you have a very unique and worthwhile experience.
The only thing I would add is that I'd love to learn more about the chemistry and the process of making glass work, which I know can be hard given limited time and different interests of individuals.
Had a great time with friends and Doug was very patient and helpful. He walked everyone through the process as a dry run and then expertly guided each person through making their unique pumpkin. He was very good at gauging each person's ability and ensuring our masterpieces came out great. I would definitely do it again and try other techniques.
The living social deal really made this cool artistic medium affordable!
Fantastic experience! This was my second visit to Half Moon Bay Art Glass for a lesson -- this time to make a "memory ball," a hollow sphere, clear on top with a band of color around the bottom, which can be filled with shells or dried flowers or memorabilia. Doug kept everyone engaged, made sure everyone took all safety measures, and that everyone created a beautiful piece with his expert and patient guidance. Taking a friend or an out-of-town guest for a single-visit class here is a different and fun way to spend half a day. Bonus: While you're there, you can buy reasonably priced, beautiful handmade glass pieces for gifts or for yourself. I recommend liking Half Moon Bay Art Glass's page on Facebook -- you never know when you're going to win a drawing posted there for something cool (like a class, which I won!), and in the meantime you can see all the great creations visiting students have made.
Having taken several classes in San Jose, I thought my experience would be the same. I was SO MUCH better than anticipated. Douglas is a wonderful teacher. He's patient, doesn't rush through, will answer questions and doesn't look at you like you've got a third eye if the question has an obvious answer. He's very thorough as to what is happening in the glass at the stages and as to why you're doing different things. You're not going to get lost in the instructions and if you do, he'll gently guide back on track. I'm a person who asks alot of questions. Suzy answered every one without ever getting short with all the inquiries.
Having a family member that's wheelchair bound, you need to know that there's two big steps you'll need to take; the first to get up to the work area and the other to put your glass in the mold. The mold one can be manipulated around but the one into the shop area is 12".
THe thing I like about this place vs. some of the other classes is you have so many choices of color of glass. You'll be offered almost any color combination, so think about where you'll want your pumpkin to go before you make your choice.
What can I say? I'm highly stoked on the quality of instruction I got and I LOVE MY PUMPKIN!!!!!!!!!! I'm ready for the next class..........................
Doug is a fabulous teacher. It is obvious that he loves his craft. I took a class in San Jose and even though I tried very hard to make a bowl, in the end the instructor there did most of the work and I came home with a beautiful bowl that was 25% my doing and 75% his. Today was so different. Andrea was so bubbly and helpful, she was able to answer most of my questions prior to getting started and Doug gave such clear instructions as to the whole process and safety measures to our 'pumpkin' class that he prepared us very well for this adventure.
Doug is with you the entire process with a gentle voice reviewing each step as you make your project. There is little room for error.
Today I surprised one of my friends with the class. Best time spent ever. We did about 90% of the process in making the pumpkin and now I'm hooked and can't wait to come back. Such a wonderful experience. There is so much to learn. So many wonderful things to make.
Thanks Doug and Andrea
Fun classes that help you learn and keep you involved from start to finish when making and designing your own glass projects.
I have taken glass blowing classes at San Jose Glass Institute and here at Half Moon Bay Art Glass and I love them both.
HMB Art Glass is a much smaller studio and a more intimate experience. (Just make sure you don't come here at a 90+ summer day because the studio will be very steamy)
Doug and Andrea are wonderful teachers and totally enthusiastic with their craft. I came here during harvest season and they have a fantastic display of glass pumpkins in an overwhelming array of colors and shapes. Do arrive early to browse and make your choice.
This was a great groupon deal and fun thing to do with my BFF. We came here and made mini pumpkins in November for her birthday. It was such a fun activity, I'd like to do it again!
